One of the most famous guitar virtuosos in the world, Al (Laurence) Di Meola (1954), celebrated his 70th birthday yesterday. The artist’s interest in music showed itself at an early age, he has been playing his favorite instrument, the guitar, since he was 8 years old. He also played in a band before, and his solo career began in 1976. Thanks to his virtuoso playing style and outstanding technical knowledge, he quickly gained recognition in the world of music. Di Meola’s musical greatness was shown in many musical styles, jazz, fusion, flamenco, funk, rock and various world music genres are the closest to him. During his musical career of more than four decades, he has worked with many artists, and their joint album Friday Night in San Fransisco with Paco de Lucía and John McLaughlin is considered one of the milestones of guitar music. The Grammy Award-winning performer, who is also noted as a composer and producer, will visit Hungary again in November, and fans can enjoy the performance of the talented artist at the Erkel Theater in the capital. In recognition of his work, Guitar Magazine awarded him the title of World’s Best Guitarist several times, and Guitar Player Magazine ranked him first in the Best Jazz Guitarist category – read on the website of Rock Diszkont. The guitarist, who is still active to this day, also performed a concert on his birthday, where the audience sang him Happy Birthday, and Di Meola expressed his gratitude in a post on his Facebook page.
